NEWS FROM THE ROAD

After spending several weeks in Maine, we are back on the road and the sweet sound of tires on pavement (or dirt).

We had a great rest and healing in Maine, except for my brother's heart attack. He is mending nicely. I needed the healing greatly after the loss of my forever home.

What better place than the Maine woods?

When people think of Maine, they generally think of the coast. Undoubtedly,

the coast is beautiful; with its rocky coast, small towns, ocean smells and historic lighthouses. But there was much more to Maine than the coast.

Inland, there are beautiful forest sand a crazy amount of lakes, ponds, streams, brooks and rivers. There is nothing any better than drinking from the cool, clear water of a small bubbling stream.

There is an abundance of wildlife; from the woodpecker, and hummingbird to the deer, moose and bear. Oh. And don't forget the mosquitoes and black flies!

I remember once, when I was younger, there was a trend of T-shirts, with a picture of a great mosquito and words that said "Maine State Bird"!

Maine brags having the eastern most point in the US where you can see the first rays of the sun shining every morning. It has the beginning of the Appalachian trail or the end depending on which way you're traveling. And mile high Mt. Katahdin. As the story goes, the Mountain is just a few feet under one mile, so some energetic souls piled rocks to make it one mile high.

Maine borders New Brunswick and Quebec in Canada. Before the tightening of borders, it was easy to just travel back-and-forth across the border. And as kids we crossed it plenty of times.

From top to bottom Maine is 322 miles. The state is 35,385 sq miles and the population of Maine is 1.372 million people. That is a density of 41.3 people per square mile or every person gets 15.49 acres!

The state of Maine has 6000 lakes and ponds, 73 rivers, countless streams and brooks, and 3478 miles of coastline.

There are a few tourist attractions in Maine, such as Acadia National park, Cadillac Mountain, and Bar Harbor on the coast. The three major ski areas in Maine are Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Saddleback. And the Famous LL Bean--220,000 acres of prime shopping.

Winter sports are ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. I have to tell you that those ice fishing shacks are like condos nowadays!

Maine may be known for its lobster and clam dishes but let's not forget there are many potato farms and apple orchards, in addition to maple syrup and Christmas trees and blueberries and cranberries.

Maine is a beautiful state, rich with natural resources that have yet to be marred by the human race!

I am so glad to have visited my home state. I visited old friends and was reminded that the most northeastern state in the US is one state that everyone needs to visit!

We are on the road again. This year I'll be driving the east inland coast instead of heading directly west. My plans beyond visiting Shenandoah National Park which is 105 miles long and the Blue Ridge Parkway which is another 374 miles is yet to be determined.
